1. What is machine fencing system?

Machine fencing is a safety feature on or around manufacturing or other engineering equipment consisting of a shield or device covering hazardous areas of a machine to prevent contact with body parts or to control hazards like chips or sparks from exiting the machine. Industrial safety fencing, also known as machine guarding systems or perimeter fencing, is designed to safely separate personnel, equipment, and/or property from harm or loss. Any machine part, function, or process which may cause injury must be safeguarded. Where the operation of a machine or accidental contact with it can injure the operator or others in the vicinity, the hazards must either be eliminated or controlled.

2. Why is a guarding machine needed?

Machine guarding helps to prevent amputations, lacerations, crushing injuries, and abrasions. Without such guarding, the resulting injury can be severe or even fatal. There's never a good reason to remove a guard on a machine that you're using, even if you think you can work faster without it.

3. What is the most common type of machine guard?

The most common types of machine guards are:
▪ Fixed guards.
▪ Interlocking guards.
▪ Adjustable guards.
▪ Self-adjusting guards.

4. What is the safest type of fence?

Our recommendations: metal or wire mesh fencing

5. Is it OK to remove a machine guard?

To keep your workplace safe and avoid costly injuries and lawsuits, provide all employees with proper training before they operate any machinery or guards and keep up with regular maintenance and repairs. Instruct employees to never remove machine guards before or while operating a machine.

6. Do machine guards have to be yellow?

To reiterate what the standard says, "yellow is used to identify physical hazards." If the guard of a machine does not present a physical hazard such as, but not limited to, tripping, falling, struck by, or caught-between, then there would be no need for color-coding.
