Ningbo waxberry has a very long history. 7,000 years ago, in the Yuyao Hemudu site, archaeologists found the nuclei of wild waxberry, and the history of artificial cultivation can be traced back to 2,000 years ago. Ningbo waxberry is especially famous for Yuyao and Cixi, and the two places are recognized as the "hometown of Chinese waxberry".

Ningbo waxberry has many varieties, the most extensive planting area and the most famous is the "water chestnut seed", the fruit is round, colorful, sweet and small. There are also a small number of carbon black species, bayberry is small in size, thick black color, mainly planted in Elephant Mountain. In recent years, new varieties such as Dongkui waxberry have also been planted in various parts of Ningbo, which are fresh, sweet and sour, and the market time is later than that of water chestnut seeds, which prolongs the consumption time of waxberry.
